You call me sweetheart As if you really believe it As if I don’t give you reason to run and hide. I warned you of who I am Of how I run through the mouth like saltwater On a cold beach day But you told me not to think like that “I love you, sweetheart, and that’s enough” And I could taste the honey drip from your lips. But the storms come And the tides no longer roll at your feet They swallow you in their waves And you are lost at sea Gasping, you choke on the salted water Just like I had warned You call me at night Crying “Sweetheart, oh sweetheart!” Begging for a softer love But I just bite my cheek. Salt wasn’t sweet, was it?
